Biology Progrm Overview The Biology Department emphasizes an interactive approach to science through courses that incorporate many eld and laboratory experiences as well as active undergraduate research programs in areas such as botany, microbiology, molecular biology, developmental biology, mycology, physiology, toxicology, ornithology, aquatic ecology, and wetlands ecology. Many of our students present their research at state or regional conferences and some of the most successful projects are published in scientic journals. Fiiies The Department of Biological Sciences is housed in the new, state of the art East Campus Science Center. In keeping with our emphasis on hands-on experience for all students, we have extensive equipment for teaching and research in both eld and laboratory settings. These resources include extensive sh collections, eld sampling equipment for botany and aquatics, a newly renovated greenhouse, advanced microscopy with digital cameras, advanced physiology equipment, tissue culture facilities, modern molecular biology equipment for analyses of protein, DNA and RNA, and a fully equipped microbiology lab. Through active collaborations with other departments, Biology faculty and students also have access to equipment housed in Chemistry and Nanotechnology. LHU is a member of the Marine Science Consortium consisting of 14 participating colleges and universities. At its Chincoteague Bay Field Station in Wallops Island, Virginia, the Consortium has several seagoing vessels, land laboratories, modern oceanographic equipment and living facilities for students and staff. The Consortium offers four academic sessions of three weeks each during the summer. Only one three-credit course may be taken during each session. Job Opporiies The ve options in the Bachelor of Science in Biology provide access to nearly all careers in biology and an excellent preparation for graduate and medical school. Cellular and Organismal Biology is designed for careers in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. This option is best for all pre-med, pre-dent, and pre-vet students who are in the B.S. Biology program. Ecology and Environmental Biology is meant for eld-oriented careers such as those in agriculture, environmental consulting, and state or federal environmental agencies. The Marine Biology option prepares students for aquatic-oriented careers in marine and freshwater biology such as those with state or federal regulatory agencies and shery, aquatics, or aquarium industries. The DNA Analysis Methods track inuences all elds of Biology such as medicine, forensics, evolutionary biology, ecology and species identication. Graduates of the DNA Analysis Methods track routinely enter graduate programs or go directly to work in medical, research, and forensic laboratories. The General Biology option provides exibility to select coursework that combines features and opportunities provided by other Biology options. Recent surveys of our Biology graduates indicate that a large percentage of respondents are either employed full-time or continuing their education in graduate/professional programs at schools such as Case Western University, Colorado State University, Cornell University, Penn State University, SUNY, Temple, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and University of New Hampshire.
