Veteran ’ s Day Program by: Stephanie Lingenfelter On November 11, our school had an outstanding Veteran ’ s Day program. Mr. Rinehold started the program with a welcoming and then the WCHS Military Club followed with the presentation of the colors. Following, Kat Roames and Allie Watson read a poem and then Reese Gick led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the Wind Ensemble and Choir performing The Star Spangled Banner led by Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Briel. The choir and band did an amazing job and definitely deserved a round of applause. Kailynn Phillips did an introduction of speakers after the choir and band performance. Mr. Williams also shared a speech. His speech was very well written and I especially liked the part when he talked about the sacrifices you have to make to be in the military, which Mrs. Woodward knows very well. After Mr. William ’ s speech, Mr. Parkhurst sang and played “ In Color ” by Jamey Johnson with a voice only a successful country singer possesses. Following Mr. Parkhurst ’ s wonderful playing and singing, Mrs. Woodward gave a speech about her father ,who was a veteran. Like I said before, Mrs. Woodward knew all about the sacrifices military men and women endured and had to make. Her dad wasn ’ t deployed after she was born, so she didn ’ t have to endure that sacrifice, but she learned all about sacrifices through him and his sto- ries. Mrs. Woodward ’ s speech was heartwarming and brought tears to hers and many others eyes. The choir then beautifully sang “21 Guns ” by Green Day. Next, a video of Katie Phipps interviewing Phil Clinger, a Pearl Harbor survivor, was shown. The video was well put together, and I enjoyed listening to what Mr. Clinger had to say. For the ending of the pro- gram, the trumpeters of the Wind Ensemble performed Taps, a traditional military song. All the presenters, performers, and speakers did a beautiful job, making the program memorable and breathtaking. Following the program, there was a reception for all the military guests and their families, and I got the privilege of attending as well as to interview some veterans and active service men. Everyone said they re- ally enjoyed this program. Scott Chapman, is in the First Army East and is in active duty. James Stachow- icz is active in the army, and Stan Emerson is active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Mr. Williams, the math teacher, is in the reserves. I really enjoyed talking to these brave service men, and I loved getting to know a little bit about them. One per- son who really stood out to me was Stan Emerson. Mr. Emerson was in the military and then he retired and went to work on the ra ilroad. After the railroad, he became a high school teacher and remained a teacher for 17 years! Then, he decided to join up again and is now a part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary as a Vessel Examiner. If you are considering joining the military, I suggest talking to veterans and service men and women that you know. They will o ffer you great advice, and they are all such great people that would be an honor to know and listen to. I personally loved meeting them and he aring all the sto- ries and great advice they had to offer. Even when it ’ s not Veteran ’ s Day, you should always thank a soldier when you see them. They are such amazing people and are full of wisdom and bravery that you can only get from being a soldier. They are all worth one second of our time and all deserve that one seco nd plus many more. Soldiers are the bravest people we know and deserve all of our respect, so have you thanked a soldier today? 8th grader, Ben Stachowicz and family Allie Watson, Kat Roames, Reese Gick, Kailynn Phillips Mr. Chapman and Triston Chapman Band performing Mr. Parkhurst Mr. Williams
