Great occasion, great programme 100 concerts! What a milestone and what a wonderful achievement for Alan Free and the Sinfonietta! St Helens Town Hall on February 28th will be a special place to be as they reach this landmark, an evening when they can look back with pride over 17 years of fine music-making and look forward in anticipation to more fine evenings to come. And what a programme! The much- loved melodies of Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 , the dark, dramatic beauty of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto (Alan Free has been itching to do this piece for a long time!), and the best-known of all symphonies, Beethoven’s 5th, make this a programme worthy of the occasion. A real treat in store! Ted Kirk’s preview If, in these days of pop trivia, there is still a great work of orchestral music that “everybody knows”, it surely must be Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Go on, sing the first eight notes! But if you’re not very sure what comes after that, the Sinfonietta’s 100th concert is the place to be. You’ll hear the greatest of all composers defy the challenge of cruel fate, and proclaim a hard-won victory. Another formidable lion of music, Sibelius, will be represented by his thrilling Violin Concerto, which could be illustrating an adventure story from the Sagas of Finland. It will spotlight a magnificent young soloist much associated with the Sinfonietta: Dewi Tudor Jones (see front cover). And to launch the concert we have Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, which includes the popular numbers Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King . Grieg - Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 Sibelius - Violin Concerto Beethoven - Symphony No. 5 Conductor - Alan Free Soloist - Dewi Tudor-Jones (violin) Saturday, February 28 th 2015 7 30 p.m. £15 (usual concessions) ST HELENS TOWN HALL Tickets 01744 600846 CELEBRATION
