• Wappewassick is one of the names the Indigenous Peoples used to identify the island where I live. It means “at the narrow straights” (O’Brien, Frank Waabu. Understanding Indian Place Names in Southern New England , 2010). I wonder if that refers to the northern part of the island which is quite close to another small island and the mainland?
