WWW.SWANAGEPIERTRUST.COM The History of Swanage Pier 1859-61 The first wooden pier was built by James Walton of London for use by passenger steamers and shipping some Purbeck stone. 1895 November 30 The first pile for the new pier was driven. 1897 March 29 The pier opened to all traffic. By the 1920’s Greenheart timber piles began decaying. 1930’s to 1950’s Decking removed and the first Pier was used as a diving platform for Swanage Swimming Club. 1940 The pier was breached as a wartime anti-invasion precaution. 1948 The missing section was restored in concrete. 1966 From September The pier fell into disrepair for 20 years. 1994 Swanage Pier Trust acquired control of the pier to eventually provide for its total restoration. 21 st Century Ongoing renovations have made the Pier an important central point for the sea front at Swanage; a base from which our Jurassic coastline can be explored and an educational centre through our museum. But there is more work to be done! Pier Facts: The Pier is 642½ feet long and there are 180 greenheart piles underpinning the structure. Each pile is driven about 12 feet into the layer of ‘Gault’ clay and is held in place as a resul t of the movement of the sea and clay filling in and forming around the base of the pile.
