1 Is the movie Australia representative of Australia (the country) or is it a Hollywood version of reality? The movie Australia corresponds with how life was and is in Australia, however, the majority of the movie is a Hollywood created reality. Indigenous Australians In the movie Australia, the aspect that corresponds with how life would have been in the late 1930s and early 1940s is the Indigenous Australians and their traditions and way of life, along with the cruelty and discrimination they received from the white settlers. The Dreaming The movie shows how the Dreaming is important in the Aboriginal culture, and constantly makes references to the ‘Rainbow Serpent’, the creature that Indigenous Australians believe creat ed the universe. The dreaming is the continuation of those spirit ancestors in the relationships between all living and non- living things. In most stories of the Dreaming, the Ancestor spirits came to the earth in human form and as they moved through the land, they created the animals, plants, rocks and other forms of the land that we know today. Today it is thought that over 100,000 Indigenous Australian children were taken from perfectly capable families. The effects of the Stolen Generation that were not shown in the movie include loneliness, low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness, loss of identity, legal problems, mistrusting everyone, internal guilt, and in some cases substance and alcohol abuse. The Indigenous Australian culture is one where stories and tales were to only way of passing information and legend from generation to generation. Because of the children being taken, it has been said that a lot of people don’t Figure 1 Fi ure 2
