Newsletter 2 WHAT’S HAPPENING Sweet Sounds The sweet sounds of music were heard on December 9, 2014 in the auditorium of Sayreville War Memorial High School, and it was coming from the Middle School Chorus and Band. The annual Winter Concert featured the chorus and band members from grades 6, 7, and 8. Mrs. Ruiz directed the 6 th grade chorus while Mrs. Malara directed the 7 th & 8 th grade chorus, and finally Mrs. Campbell directed the band with Mr. Carusso. It was a fantastic performance culminating with all of the performers singing, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” as a finale. SMS Costume Wars For the past few years the Sayreville Middle School staff has organized and participated in Costume Wars for charity on Halloween. Each wing chooses a theme and dresses accordingly like the Upper C Wing stick people, B Wing Lego Characters, Upper D Wing Apps, or the P.E. Fairies. Some wings even decorate their hallways. This year if you walked down the Lower C Wing you were drowned in a sea of M & M’s or maybe you saw Dr. Seuss characters come alive in the Lower D Wing. In the end, the stud ents voted for the Lower C Wing M & M’s as the best costume. Congratulations! Running The Distance: SMS Cross Country By Hailey Beeler and Megan McCrea We asked these star runners, Maria Santiago, Ryan Casano, and Kai Cox-Allison, some questions about how and why they chose cross country, and also their feelings about being on the team. The first question we asked them was, “What made you do Cross Country?” Maria answered by saying, “I did it last year, and I enjoyed it.” We also asked, “What do you feel at the meets?” The answers we got were determined, nervous and excited. We also asked many other questions such as, “What advice do you have for students that might consider joining Cross Country next year?” Kai said, “You have to work ha rd and be determined.” We asked these fabulous, talented runners their fastest times, and we got astonishing answers. Kai and Ryan both have school records of 8 minutes and 38 seconds, and Maria ’s fastest time is 10 minutes and 4 seconds. The trio’s longe st run was an amazing 7.5 miles. Wow!
