I couldn’t stand still. I just couldn’t. I had to swish my skirt, tap my feet, move my fingers, anything to keep my mind off what was coming at me fast. I focused all my energy on moving my skirt so the sequins shone red and silver, not at all ready to face the music. The fact that we had practiced everyday of the week including my precious Saturday mornings did not mean that I wasn’t nervous for the upcoming performance. In fact, it made me worry even more that I would mess up, since I knew how hard we’d worked for the next two minutes of our lives. I had to do well, for the sake of my dance group, for the directors who were counting on a great performance, for the expectant audience, and for myself. Our dance group stood in the dimly lit corridor under the auditorium, holding our red-sequined dresses, making sure to stay silent. The hallway that stretched behind me was an eerie blue cave, as if reminding me that I couldn’t go back now. I stood unmoving, not wanting to tip over the tower that was precariously balancing silence, nervousness and excitement before it would all explode on stage. My friends next to me weren’t helping me calm down either, standing and looking down nervously at their bare feet that would be skimming across the stage in a matter of seconds. I replayed the dance routine in my head, recalling each step, each movement of the fingertips; I’d always enjoyed learning the steps and practicing. The sequins on my costume reflected the lights on the walls, shimmering silver, then turning a metallic red again. The flowing skirt underneath me rippled gently as I rocked back and forth, sequins jingling softly. I was staring at my skirt, comforted by the gentle swish of it, when I heard the crowd applaud, and the staff called us to move to the wings of the stage. I froze. All the energy
