2 Most division governors serve only one term, but Steve Lanham, DTM, opted to return as Bluegrass Division E Governor again for the 2014 - 2015 year. “I’m so proud of what we accom- plished over the last year,” he said, “but I just felt like there was more work to be done here.” Last year (July 2013 to June 2014), Bluegrass Division E earned Select Dis- nguished Status, with eight disn- guished or higher clubs. All three areas also ended up disnguished or higher. “It was a banner year for our division,” Lanham said. The division more than doubled its output of educaonal awards from the previous year to a total of 72. “Last year, our focus was on boosng the educaonal programs in all our clubs and to culvate a spirit of cama- raderie and kinship among members of dierent clubs throughout the Blue- grass,” he said. “And we did that.” This year he said he wants to focus more on markeng, beeng up mem- bership, and starng new clubs. “The name recognion for Toastmas- ters is low in this part of Kentucky. We need to a beer job of geng the word out about who we are,” Lanham said. “We oer a low - cost program for skills that just about anybody can use. How can anyone turn that down?” The division hopes to charter a new club at University of Kentucky this fall. “I really appreciate the eorts of Len- roy Jones, club President Coria Bowen, and others in starng this club ,” he said. “I also love the great venue pro- vided by UK Stuckert Career Center.” Lanham added that he’d like to start 2 more new clubs this year. There has been some interest in Toastmasters in Morehead and Danville. Lanham began his Toastmasters jour- ney more than a decade ago aer he was put on a Performance Improve- ment Plan for what he said was his inability to communicate with his doc- umentaon and training team at UPS. “I was a very reluctant Toastmaster at rst. It took me two years to earn my Competent Communicator award and I really didn’t buy into the leadership side of the program unl three years ago,” he said. “It was then — and only then — that I discovered that I do en- joy leadership. Now I have to admit that I’m a Toastmasters junkie.” Lanham said he has derived the most sasfacon out of making a dierence in the division, especially among mem- bers. He said he also enjoys becoming acquainted with people throughout the division and the district. He said his major challenge last year was working with district leadership. “I had a dicult me helping district leaders understand the unique chal- lenges that we face here in the Blue- grass Division,” he explained. “I have to admit that I do ask a lot of ques- ons and I can be very persistent.” In his spare me, Lanham enjoys read- ing, playing word games, watching UK sports — and geng his TM x.
