Being a Doctor is very important because we all trust Doctors and expect them to be trustworthy, this makes his character more unusual and messed up because it breaks conventions of what we normally expect from a doctor, this is used to get into your mind, it is one of the main conventions of the thriller genre. Extreme close ups, point of view shots and eye line match camera angles are used for Hanable to get into the audiences head, these shots are used to show how unstable and mental he is, compared to the other characters looking into his eyes and him staring back makes the audience think about his thought process and what’s happening in his head, therefore getting you thinking the same thinks this is what makes the character scary, not just the murders. The technique of getting into the audiences head and getting us participating in the film, not just watching it, makes the film scarier because you cant tell what’s going to happen next, you are as much in the dark as the poice and detectives in the film, but in addition i do think that the popular conventions of the thriller genre gives the audience a sense of fear and suspense because you know what he is doing behind the detectives back, this makes finding out what he does much more gruesome and unbelievable. In addition the choice of cast and actors to play the character is very important in the history of this character as the actors all bring their own interpretation of the character, i think the best and Oscar winning adaptation is the first film silence of the lambs reliced in 1991 played by Anthony Hopkins the film is much darker than its future adaptations, it follows the codes and conventions of the horror genre, being set in a asylum and prison using loud diegetic metal bangs emphasising incarceration rather than the detective and thriller side. The male gaze theory is used alot with Hanable, with many of his victims being women, he is shown to so create a performance with his killings making them to look like they have been experimented with, in different ways every time, this hides the fact he is removing body parts. Also in the original 1991 adaptation the main FBI agent detective on his case is a women, this creates a suspense because she is represented as a strong independent women, but compared to Hannibal she is no match, he is smart and very strong. High angled shots are used with them to show danger and intimidation, it shows how much power he has over everyone even when he is safely behind bars. This camera angle joined with quick sudden jump cut editing reinforces to audiences about the idea of evolution and animals, being innocent so using the same shots for the female characters or cutting to a animal being chased represents the humans being animals too, this shows what his mental state is and that he has lots all faith in humanity, and god so therefor does n’t think anything of what he’s doing.
