This paper presents a study that explored the reading problems and strategies reported by Saudi EFL readers as they processed expository and narrative texts. The coding of the verbal protocols revealed taxonomy of seventy cognitive and metacognitive processes being reported. The findings indicated that the structural variation of text types was the main factor affecting the quantity and quality of readers’ problems and strategies. Although no significant differences were found between readers’ problems and strategies, the qualitative findings revealed how EFL good and poor readers varied in employing the strategies in the texts.
