! ! Page 2 ! : President Lincoln has just suspended habeas corpus. If you don’t know what habeas corpus is, it is to help people who are arrested to be put before a judge to secure their release, unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention. John Merrymann was arrested 2 days ago on May 25, 1861. He was indicted for treason. He was taken by Union troops and is now is held in Fort McHenry. He tried to get a petition for a writ of habeas corpus granted to him by Chief Justice Taney. The petition was disobeyed by General Cawalader under President Lincoln's orders. ! I do not think Lincoln should have suspended habeas corpus cause it will make the northerners get hot headed about the fact that this man was just a militia officer for the confederacy. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
