Cyclops Polyphemus The name Cyclops comes from the greek words kyklos (cycle) ops (eye) and means rounded-eye. Description (photo a) In greek mythology, the Cyclops were members of a race of one-eyed giants. They were very strong and looked monstrous because of their proportions and their single eye in the middle of their forehead. Origins The Cyclops were sons of gods although they were mortal. For Hesiod they were the sons of Uranus and Gaia but in Homer’s Odyssey the famous Cyclops Polyphemus is described as the son of Poseidon, god of the sea. Location ( b) According to the Odyssey the Cyclops were living in caves on an island that was probably a remote part of Sicily. Character and way of life The Cyclops were simple-minded shepherds but they were savage and dangerous; they would attack ships that sailed nearby and eat human flesh. The story of Odysseus and Polyphemus from Homer’s Odyssey (c, d, e) Coming back from Troia, Odysseus and his crew landed on Cyclops island in search of provisions. They became trapped in a cave where the cyclops Polyphemus was keeping his sheep. When Polyphemus discovered the men of the crew, he began to devour them one by one. Odysseus offered him some strong wine and the giant asked his name. “ Nobody ” answered Odysseus so the giant promised to eat this “ nobody ” last. While the drunk Cyclops was asleep, Odysseus pierced his eye with a sharp burning stake. He called for help but, as he was screaming “Nobody’s killing me” , his neighbors didn’t enter into the cave. Later on, when Polyphemus had to let his sheep go outside for food, Odysseus and his companions, hidden under the sheep, manage to escape from the blind cyclops and sailed away from the island.
