Page 2 Academic Progress and the development of character are highly prioritised in Moor Park. The school year got off to a fantastic start with the highest ever number of pupils from local primary schools joining Year 7; an increasing number of students joining our new sixth form; approval for the next new-building programme to provide more classrooms and a very successful inspection. One of the many strengths school inspectors identified was how successful so many students are in progressing into post 16 education, training and employment. In particular, they were impressed with the high number, over 85%, staying in full-time education as other students progressed onto apprenticeships, work and employment with training. Nationally the number of young people not in employment, education or training, called NEETs has increased across the country, including Preston. Yet students in Moor Park have bucked this trend over a number of years. The reasons are simple; in Moor Park we ensure our students are well prepared for work as much as their academic abilities are developed. In 2012, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) report ‘First Steps’, criticised the education system for having become an “exams factory” and called for a renewed focus on creating “rounded and grounded young people” with the skills and behaviours business needs. This is why we have always promoted the development of ‘enterprise skills’, for example, through provision of a wide range of educational opportunities for our students to learn and grow. A quick glance through this edition of ‘Moornews’ gives a flavour of what we offer our students. I’m sure you will enjoy reading about the successes of so many Moor Park students. I am tremendously proud of their achievements. The inspectors described the working relationships between students of all ethnic heritage backgrounds as exemplary. It is not often we see students being so highly praised.
