SUSPENSION OF HABEAS CORPUS " A few days ago, I went to a press conference where president Lincoln announced that he is going to be suspending Habeas Corpus. Habeas Corpus is the legal procedure that keeps the government from holding you without showing cause. John Merryman was the man who started this all. In May of 1861 he was arrested in his home by Union troops and conned in a prison at Fort McHenry. Merryman than proceeded to petition for a writ of Habeas Corpus, which was granted by Chief Justice Taney, but it was declined because Lincoln said he was suspending Habeas Corpus. Taney declared Lincoln’s suspension as unconstitutional and nothing has happened since. I for one think Lincoln is wrong in this case. I don’t think he should of suspended this law because it’s a law that the people need. This has been the largest and bloodiest battle in America up to this point. Approximately 460 Union troops were killed while only 387 confederate troops were killed. This battle has been important because it has shown everyone that this war is going to be much longer than everyone has anticipated. The battle has also shown the Union troops that they are in for a real ght. " Citing: Notes and http://www.civilwar.org/battleelds/bullrun.html " " " " " "
