Grade 7 visited the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi The students of Grade 7 had an amazing day exploring paintings by two very famous artists, Amrita Sher-Gill and Raja Ravi Varma based on their Art unit – Portrait (Foundation-representational study). These expressionists have created a myriad of paintings ranging from Indian to European culture. Since we have been exploring the global context; Personal and Cultural Expression, in the unit. We investigated the works of both the artists as titles: Spanish Girl, Self Portrait, a portrait of a Gentleman, women holding a fruit and many more. We observed mediums like oil on canvas and various other techniques explored by the artists. We also learned about the significance of portrait paintings and how artists convey a message through portraits. We were inspired by what we saw; gained knowledge about these artists and developed better artistic skills. We were also amazed by the way these artists communicated expressions in their paintings. Laya Iyer and Saadwi Balaji Grade 7 Reflection on the trip ‘ Art washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life’ – Pablo Picasso The students of Grade 8 have been studying proto-cubism as a part of their MYP Art curriculum. We were introduced to the geometrical shapes and the semi-abstract paintings, and the work of Pablo Picasso in the early 1900s. Today, on 30 th September, students of Grade 8 went for a field trip to the National Art Gallery to explore the cubistic approach of the Indian artists. Although, we have been to this place before ,yet we were overwhelmed by the majestic paintings all around us. However, this time the exploration was more focused on the unit at hand. The first section we visited had a display of the artwork of Ramkinkar Baij, a well-known cubism artist, famous for his semi-abstract landscape painting and his Lithoprint art work. Next, we studied two major cubistic paintings of N.S. Bendre, famous for his colorful, vibrant painting ‘Thorn’, which displays simplicity of the Indian culture through contrasting colors and a distorted image that actually comes out beautifully. His other painting, a little more subtle, was of a ‘Shepherdess’ We also studied the extremely famous and incredible art work of Satish Gujral and M.F Hussain. It was a great experience, exploring Indian art and culture, and the artists’ take on Cubism, identifying the culture portrayed through the paintings and keeping in mind how innovation has changed the perception of aesthetics and cultural expression of the artwork. It was an enriching experience and we had a lot to take back. Mehak Malhotra- Grade 8
