As a mother of three, returning to the work- force, I have quickly familiarised myself with childcare options. At some point most stay-at- home mothers or fathers experience the excite- ment of returning to the adult world but also the daunting task of arranging care for their children. Regarding school aged children, childcare may seem irrelevant, however many jobs are not built around school hours and there are always holidays to consider. Luckily most local schools provide before and after school care and holiday programmes. As for preschool children, three to ve-year olds are able to go to early childhood education (ECE) services for six hours a day, 20 hours a week at no charge. In addition, many local kindergartens have options for parents who are working, including extended times. However, what if you are returning to work and your child has not yet reached the age of three? It is in this age group you will discover that ECE funding is non-existent and weigh- ing up the cost of childcare against your income becomes a factor. While 20 years ago it was assumed that mum would stay home with the children, today a family where both parents work is quickly becoming the norm. While it would be ideal for one parent to stay at home until the child is three, it is not always possible, whether the extra income is needed or mum wants to regain her sanity. I have often wondered, since beginning this process, why funding is not allocated to children under three, especially as I left my own two-and- a-half year old at childcare today playing with many other under threes. This lack of funding also limits childcare options for many of us, in an ideal world a small intimate childcare centre or nanny would be the rst choice but accommodat- ing our budget means a large day care with lower staff to child ratios. Perhaps extra funding would allow us to choose a childcare service that ts our child’s personality rather than our nancial situation. This thought never seemed as clear as when I noticed at morning drop off the juxtaposition of an overwhelmed staff and a sad little fellow who would have greatly bene ted from more one on one time.
