On October 11, 214, the high school had a home- coming planned by the seniors. The theme of homecoming was “All Around the World.” Dorothy Tisdel, a senior, said, “The reason we have homecoming is to cele- brate the last year for sen- iors to come home.” Angel Busano added that, “Homecoming is for us to celebrate the first season of sports.” Everyone went through a lot of work to get ready for Homecoming, especially the seniors, who planned the entire thing and made all of the deco- rations. The girls had to get their makeup and hair done and the guys had to get their suits. Angel said, “All the girls went to their friends’ houses and got their makeup and hair done.” The high school and middle school also participated in Homecom- ing week, where they all dress up and had fun. “Homecoming week is to build up the spirit for the high school dance that was coming up,” Angel said. Dorothy added “my favorite part of Homecom- ing week is being able to dress crazy!” Homecoming court, which is a group of individuals that are chosen to represent their class at the dance, is chosen by voting for each position when they were buying tickets for the dance. Homecoming is a tradition and it is important to have. Angel said, “Homecoming is important because we get to celebrate what sports teams accom- plished so far this year.” Phoebe Bailey said, “Homecoming was very exciting!” All the high school students should thank the seniors for plan- ning their homecoming and making it as much fun as it was! Winter Ball is coming up next in Decem- ber and is going to be hosted by the Sophomores before Prom, which is go- ing to be hosted by the Juniors at the end of the year! Page 2 IUS Press Homecoming by Breanna Ellingham, Gr. 8 Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that celebrates the first sailing to America. Christopher Columbus was a Spanish sailor that at- tempted to navigated to Asia from Spain for gold and spices for the king and queen of Spain, but instead landed in the new world which is now called America. Christopher Columbus landed in the new world on October 12, 1492 with his three ships the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Modern cities have changed the name of Columbus Day including Minneapolis, Minnesota followed by Seattle, Washington to Indigenous Day to better represent the ac- complishment of the landing. This holiday is celebrated on the second Monday in October each year with parades and sales ga- lore. Columbus Day represents part of the rich history of America. We hope you enjoyed your holiday thanks to Columbus discovery. Columbus Day by Keegan Sieglock, Gr. 8
