From the January 12, 2015, meeting: The season of Lent is almost upon us and, as we prepare for Jesus’ death and resurrection, I am looking forward to our new Lenten sermon series, Here I Am . This series is based on a common phrase reiterated by many characters throughout the Bible. When God calls out to them, these individuals respond by saying, “Here I am.” This phrase indi- cates that they are ready and willing to do whatever God is asking of them. Our goal during this sermon series is to reflect on the different circum- stances in which God calls out to people in the Bible. Why is God talking to them? What is it that God wants them to do? How does saying, “Here I am” impact and change the trajecto- ry of their lives? My hope is that by examining these different instances within the scrip- tures we will not only recognize when God is calling out to us but also how open we have been to God’s voice in our own lives. Four people will occupy our time during Lent: Abraham, Jacob, Samuel, and Isaiah. Each of these men was called by God to do things that were very challeng- ing, but they each did it anyway, and their willingness to say “yes” to God is why they are remembered in the Bible. Abraham was called to sacrifice his son. Jacob was called to leave his home. Samuel was called to be a prophet for Israel. Isaiah was called to lay out the path to listening for God’s voice. Each man had a specific purpose, and that purpose is mir- rored in the struggles we face in our own lives. The question we will face throughout this series is why we have accepted or rejected that calling on our lives. Each week will draw us closer to Good Friday, when we will en- counter Jesus’ death on the cross, which was the ultimate “Here I am.” I look forward to beginning this Lenten journey with you as we walk along the road of being more open to God’s voice in our lives. God is calling to us. The question we must answer is whether we are ready to say, “Here I am.” “My hope is that…we will not only recognize when God is calling out to us but also how open we have been to God’s voice in our own lives.” Call for Congregational Meeting — Session has approved a call for a congregational meeting on Sunday, February 1, 2015, for the purpose of electing an Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care and approving the Terms of Call. The meeting will begin at 9:30 am in the Chapel and will be suspended and resumed in the Sanctuary at 10:30 am and 12:00 pm in order for everyone to participate in the meeting after attending the wor- ship service of their choice. — Linda Byus, Clerk of Session The candidate will also preach at all three services.
