Dear Colleague, Since the Indiana Academic Standards were adopted last spring, I have been studying the new standards to identify key features and pinpoint changes from the Common Core. One requirement that continues to emerge as a priority in the new standards is the expectation that students build “discipline-specic literacy skills.” But before we can expect students to employ sophisticated discipline-specic literacy skills, we rst need to build their comprehension skills through generalized strategies. Our rst mission is to help students get the reading. Our second mission is to get them to think deeply when they are doing it! During “Day 1” of this workshop series, I’ll roll out my favorite classroom-tested strategies to engage student thinking when reading and writing in the content areas. With this foundation, MS & HS teachers can then advance to the specialized and unique reading skills needed for each content area. The College & Career Ready standards require all secondary teachers to focus on discipline-specic literacy strategies. This will be the primary focus of “Day 2” of this series. During this fast-paced day, we will look at the literacy demands particular to each of the major disciplines and pinpoint how students should read text and interact with vocabulary differently in the various content areas. While all attendees will be able to apply the concepts taught throughout the day, the strategies shared will be particularly relevant to MS & HS teachers of science, social studies, ELA, math, and other courses that rely heavily on a textbook and/or other reading material. At the end of both days, you’ll have the tools necessary to make your literacy instruction more explicit, more engaging, and more rigorous. I hope you can join me for one or both of these days. P.S. Remember to invite your colleagues to share these days with you. You’ll have collaboration time while you’re at the workshops and a shared understanding when you A personal invitation from Kristina Smekens “as n tes s i’ve herd Krstn, she never ceses t ze e! alws sethng new – lws sethng t lern. Increasing Test Scores on the ISTEP+ and English 10 ECA This two-day workshop provides teachers with classroom-tested strategies for helping students succeed on the language arts portion of the ISTEP+ and the English 10 ECA. Beyond just "prepping for the test," Kristina Smekens shares purposeful ideas that will help build reading and writing skills all year long.
This two-day workshop focuses on content-area standards and the shift requiring specific literacy standards within disciplinary studies. Both days provide practical application of specific strategies focusing on the skills required within the new standards. http://bit.ly/14zGPTW
