1 History of the First Baptist Church of Nutley, NJ The First Baptist Church of Nutley, NJ, whose origin dates back to 1889, is nationally renowned as the birthplace of the 300‐voiced Angelic Choir. The choir was founded and directed by the two time Grammy Award recipient, Rev. Lawrence Roberts. In the Town of Nutley, most churches were formed during the 19 th and 20 th Centuries and were organized to meet the needs of a particular constituency. The Black population in Nutley was very small and there were no religious institutions that catered to their needs. In 1889, a group of Black residents of Nutley met at the home of Mr. William and Nannie Robinson on Chestnut Street and formed a “mission.” At the meeting, William Bradshaw was elected Chairman of the Deacon Board and Mr. Robinson was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Church services were conducted in the home of the Robinsons for approximately a year. Due to the increase in membership, services were relocated to a room in the Nutley Town Hall. There, services were conducted for two years. While at that location, Mr. Robinson passed away and Mrs. Robinson married Rev. George Moon. She became known as “Mother Moon”, as she conducted Bible Study at her house for young girls. Rev. Moon considered moving the church to a site on Passaic Avenue, but he passed away before his plan was executed. The Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church was founded on Passaic Avenue. Services were held there until 1907. Then, land was purchased at the present site 13‐15 Harrison Street where a frame building was erected. Rev. Filmore Smith became the first pastor, but was compelled to retire due to ill health. He was replaced by Rev. W. M. Fitzgerald of East Orange, NJ. He remained there for eight years until 1915. Then, he decided to accept a pastorate in Newark, NJ. Rev. Fitzgerald was succeeded by Rev. R. M. Johnson of Pennington, NJ, who died the following year. Rev. Martin became the successor of Rev. Johnson. In 1926, Rev. Norman Royal Olphin Sr. became the pastor and he lead the church for eight years. During those trying times, there was very little heat in the church. The choir sang without the assistance of a piano or organ. As songs were sung, hands were clapped and feet were stomped. There were no church vans. Folding chairs and bales of hay were placed inside moving vans to transport the Candlelight Chorus to and from the church. Mrs. Salters was the directress. In 1936, Rev. George B. Riley, of Paterson, became the pastor. Under his pastorate, he reorganized the church. He officially had the name changed from Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church to the First Baptist Church of Nutley, NJ. As recorded on April 11, 1939, the church received its Charter and Tax Exempt status. The building was remodeled and enlarged. A new organ was purchased, a new heating unit was installed and the seating capacity was enlarged. Lula Beatrice, Rev. Riley’s wife started the 1 st Black Girl Scout Troop in Nutley. Rev. Riley served as pastor until his death in 1949. Succeeding Rev. Riley, Rev. Joseph J. Napier became pastor and served from May 1950 to 1959.
