Zechman, Advancement Ofcer What began 30+ years ago as a call to build a permanent public endowment is now more than 550 active Funds, each an investment to support opportunities and address challenges in our community. We are the Community Foundation o Lorain County, a center o philanthropy advanced by tens o thousands o donors committed to strengthening the community we call home. Foundation grant dollars have touched hundreds o thousands o lives through the agencies, schools, projects and issues that we’ve unded. Though these grant dollars have accomplished amazing results, we have learned that complex issues acing our community require more than grant making. Let me share with you some o the important lessons learned: 1. We can’t, and shouldn’t go at it alone. Signifcant assets can be aligned when working collectively with our partners in the community. 2. We must use all o our assets (fnancial, human, and organizational) . We have a tremendous network o time, talent, and treasure at our disposal. Knowledge, wisdom, and trusted relationships can impact change. 3. We must act true to our values and principles. The Foundation created a Leadership Treatise this past year to guide our actions and hold us accountable to the community. 4. We must be patient and persistent. Community issues weren’t created overnight and many have resisted years o noble attempts at intervention. As a “orever” organization, we are uniquely positioned to persist, until change is realized. How are we implementing this knowledge? I invite you to read this Annual Report and see how we’ve made a meaningul dierence. Our theme, Connecting + Community , brings together two simple words describing what we do and why we do it . Thank you to our many supporters whose commitment makes this mission possible. Brian R. Frederick President & CEO The Community Foundation o Lorain County has chosen two simple, yet powerul words to summarize what we do and why we do it: Connections + Community. By any measure o connections, 2013 was a monumental year or the Foundation and our community. The Foundation broke the $100 million mark and ended the year with assets o almost $115 million. This milestone was realized by more than 2,000 gits and bequests totaling a record $14 million, as well as net investment returns o 18.6%. The Foundation awarded more than 700 individual grants and scholarships totaling $4.3 million. Since its inception, the Foundation has invested more than $73 million in our community. In this 2013 Annual Report, you will read about donors who want to make a lasting impact and have chosen the Foundation as their vehicle. You’ll read stories o connections made between the charitable passions o generous people and the change their Funds have on real needs in our community. And, we hope that you’ll come to understand how anyone can easily establish a permanent Fund. The impact o the Community Foundation o Lorain County goes well beyond grantmaking. The story about Program Related Investments illustrates how we use our balance sheet as a tool or community change. Additionally, the Foundation leverages human capital, including the Board, sta and volunteers, to invest thousands o hours in making our community a better place to live. This report celebrates our impact and success thus ar. A community oundation is only as strong as the people who join us in making a dierence.
