Why I love what I do can be summed up in a shoe. An ordi- nary, crusty, old, faded, smelly, black sneaker. But when put in the hands of a group of individuals, that ordinary shoe turns to pure magic. I take you back to April 2014, Cape Canaveral, Florida. Unit- ed Launch Alliance. Seven strong consultants arrived in one location with one mission to accomplish: change the way the organization does business. The majority of the group rolled into the project from the preceding site in VAFB and, there- fore, knew exactly what needed to be accomplished to reach a favorable outcome. On week one of the project, we were released like vultures and went our separate ways on a vast terrain (ULA’s site was extremely spread out). The mission was clear, the outcome was known, and we worked earnestly to meet it. Now in comes the shoe. It was a lone sneaker that lied incon- spicuously on the passenger side of a Hertz vehicle. Upon finding it, thoughts of a small elderly woman searching for her black ked shoe came to mind. Unfortunately, we didn’t care because as soon as we found it, the shoe instantly came alive. (Poor little ole lady, she’s probably still searching for it!) Over the course of 19 weeks, the shoe was privately passed from consultant to consultant by way of “special” delivery from the hotel concierge or secretly stuffed in carry bags. Picture this: You arrive at your home after a long week on site. You open your suitcase, and voila, an extra shoe is in your bag. All you can do is chuckle. This happened to me on more than one occasion. When the shoe was found, the person who received it had to plot its next move. The question would surface during inter- nals “Who was to receive the infamous black shoe?” It made its way to Texas, California, Vegas and so many other plac- es. If it could have frequent flyer miles, it would be a million miler by now. Amazingly, the shoe spread laughter and connection, which was desperately needed given the plate of clients we all jug- gled. In retrospect, I see that the shoe was more than just a shoe. We were so focused on achieving greatness with the client that we overlooked what this job is all about: building strong teams to create magic. And guess what? By the end of the project, we created mag- ic. That ordinary, crusty, old, faded, smelly, black sneaker was the catalyst for the strong rapport that was built during the project. We developed into a strong team, and by the end of the project, we walked away with a savings of over 250%. So I end with this: Michael Jordan once said, “ Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships. ” So, why I love this job is simple. I love it for the magic that is achieved through the hard work of a strong, smart, fun, dedi- cated team that works together to achieve magic. The shoe serves as just a symbol of what team camaraderie and work- ing together truly means.
