engage | educate | empower | ellis ELLIS MEMORIAL ANNUAL REPORT 2013 ELLIS MEMORIAL Ellis Memorial was ounded in Boston in 1885, during the early years o the settlement house movement. Concentrated in poor urban areas, settlement houses were organizations staed by volunteers who had the time and fnancial resources to help improve the living conditions o working amilies living in poverty, many o whom were recent immigrants. Early services included child care, education, vocational training, meals and basic health services. Today, we serve predominantly low-income, culturally diverse amilies rom a vibrant cross-section o Boston neighborhoods, including the South End, Roxbury, Dorchester, South Boston and Chinatown. As we look orward to celebrating our 130th anniversary next year, we continue to invest in the uture o our community and our city by delivering a range o high-quality programs that promote the healthy development o children, academic success, the stability o amilies, and the emotional and physical well-being o elderly or disabled adults.
