2 HISTORY 240: HISTORY OF KENTUCKY map quiz (5%) historic site (15%) midterm exam (20%) local news- paper (20%) final exam (20%) Lecture Tools (10%) partici- pation (10%) final grade Grading scale: A= 90-100%, B= 80-89.9%, C= 70-79.9%, D= 60-69.9%, E= below 60% Map quiz You will be required to identify the state’s major cities, rivers, lakes, etc. Historical site visit response Visit one of the following: Ashland, the Transylvania medical museum, or the Pope Villa. As a follow-up to your visit and to our discussion in class about Lexington’s role as the Athens of the West, write a 2 -3 page response in which you thoughtfully consider how your chosen site represents the promise Kentucky displayed in the early nineteenth century. See class hand out (also on Blackboard) for more specific details. Local newspaper assignment Locate a newspaper from your home town (if you are not from Kentucky, I will help you choose a newspaper). Select an era prior to World War II that particularly interests you and read one full issue cover to cover from that period. After you complete your research, write a 4-5 page paper. Do not just summarize the articles, but put them into some bigger context — develop themes, identify a thesis. What can we learn from this glimpse into the past? See class hand out (on Blackboard) for more specific details. Midterm and final exam The exams will include identifications and essay questions. Questions will come from your reading assignments, lectures, and from in-class activities. LectureTools homework See last page of the syllabus for more detailed instruction on how to use LectureTools. Class participation & possible quizzes Class participation requires dedicated attendance. More than two unexcused absences in this class will lead to a serious reduction in your participation grade. Attendance, however, is not enough. You also must contribute actively to discussion and class activities. Participating in discussions will enhance your learning and make the class more interesting. You may ask, “What is ‘participation’”? It includes exploring the meaning of the readings, films, and other ideas brought up in class. It can be giving answers but can also mean raising questions. It means listening carefully to other students and the professor and respectfully responding in a serious, focused manner to the issues at hand. Occasionally good participation might mean being quiet if you’ve already spoken a lot in class. Coming to class prepared and having done the reading will situate you well to participate in discussion and to perform well on quizzes, if given. Please talk with me if speaking up makes you uncomfortable. We can discuss strategies to make it easier. Extra credit I am fundamentally opposed to extra credit. I do, however, encourage full engagement with the course and reward participation in all its many forms. If you attend any community or campus events that intersect with material we are covering, provide me a short written response, and I will consider that as I calculate your participation grade.
