“Jasper, come inside now. It’s getting late,” Gran requested. Finn and I were tucked in bed when I heard Gran cry. I never heard her cry before, so it was strange for me to even think about it now. I got out of bed and creaked open the bedroom door. There was a police officer standing at our door steps. The flashing lights were blinding, but I was too curious to find out why they were here. For a second, the cop’s eyes met mine. It was like he already knew who I was. He looked back at Gran and she turned over to look at me. Her eyes swollen from the tears. I was only four, but it was already enough for me to gather that I wouldn’t ever see Mommy and Daddy again. Gran raised us up until she passed away when I was eighteen. This being the first death Finn ever truly knew, he took it pretty rough. He was getting arrested for various reasons left and right, but since he was sixteen he was left off the hook. We the little money Gran had left, I used it to help get Finn through recovery and eventually he found a cure through art. He has been painting in this studio ever since. “Hey Jasper. I’m going to head out early . I have a doctor’s appointment,” he explained. “Since when did you schedule your own appointments?” I asked. It was out of character that he was taking charge of his own life. It sounds strange, but I’m so used to being the go to guy about getting our errands done. “I’m nineteen. I can take care of my own responsibilities. No offence, but I don’t need you anymore,” he says with a smirk. He picks up his satchel and we head out the building. “I’ll see you when I get home, okay.” he says as he walks off to his car and we go our separate ways.
