Page 2 of 4 MAP 1 – Vision and Alignment - Continued FRUITFULNESS – The outcomes of a ministry that matter to the church and its community would be its fruitfulness. Put another way, fruitfulness is the effectiveness of a ministry based on the church’s vision and values. VISION – A vision defines who we are as a United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana, and what we are called, as people of God, to do in this time and place. It is the result of a process of discerning God’s will for FUMCB/Open Door and its members. Once articulated, we will be able to say with clarity that we undertake every ministry at FUMCB/Open Door SO THAT we fulfill our vision of how we are called to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. DISCIPLESHIP – Making disciples for Jesus Christ has a broad definition allowing us to embrace many people from widely diverse backgrounds who seek to join us in a Christ-centered community that seeks to bring God’s grace and healing and love to the world. 2. Doesn’t FUMCB/Open Door already have a vision, and if not, why didn’t we develop one before the consultation weekend? We have had vision statements and taglines that have been helpful in the past, but attempts in the last few years to engage in renewed visioning processes have had mixed results. Further, the FCJ visioning process itself is different from those of the past, and the way we go about developing a new God-sized vision is critical to becoming a healthier and more vital church in the 21 st Century. The process outlined in the first MAP ensures that there is broader involvement of the church members in this discerning process through the two congregational workshops. 3. Is there a list of current ministries that are needing to be more fruitful and perhaps are in danger of being discontinued? No, there is no such list. The consultation team was not given one, nor did they create one. The specific procedures for reviewing the effectiveness of our ministries will be determined as part of the first MAP, and once they are in place, then we will be asking all ministries to be able to answer the “SO THAT …” question. We have found that other churches who are currently implementing FCJ MAPs have NOT discontinued existing ministries. Instead, they have become more focused and effective as a result of the FCJ visioning and reviewing processes. Ministry Action Plan # 2 – Accountable and Effective Leadership 1. Who are the “leaders” who will be part of an Accountable Leadership workshop? In other congregations, this workshop has been open to members of the Church Council, FCJ teams and staff. That will probably be true in our church, as well. 2. What is the “silo effect” and where do we see this as a problem at FUMCB/Open Door? It is a term to describe insular groups within an organization that fail to coordinate and communicate effectively with each other . There is a tendency of ministries at FUMCB/Open Door to operate this way. Too often, staff, leaders and members of the congregation are not fully aware of what others are doing in the church, and occasionally the result may be scheduling conflicts and groups duplicating efforts or operating at cross purposes. 3. How will the MAPs task forces relate to the established church committee structure to avoid duplication and ensure transparency and accountability? Some of the MAPs clearly spell out that some of the task forces, such as the visioning and building teams, are to present their work to the Church Council for approval. It is also important to remember that approval must come from established church bodies to implement and resource new ministries. Regular progress reports will be made to Church Council at its meetings, which any member of the church can attend. There will also be periodic reports in weekly blogs, announcements in worship and The Chimes .
