Take a look at the chart below to review some rules for rounding! REMEMBER: if it is 5 or more round up, 4 or less round down! Image from: mediahex.com When we are writing numbers as money, we have to round to the nearest HUNDREDTHS place. That is TWO PLACES after the decimal point. Take a look at these examples! Round: 14.456 Our number after the HUNDREDTHS place is 6, round up! The number in the HUNDREDTHS place is 5. When we round up it goes to 6. Our final answer is $14.46! Round: 2.3401 Our number after the HUNDREDTHS place is 0, round down! The number in the HUNDREDTHS place is 4. When we round down it stays 4. Our final answer is $2.34! Round: 10.9999 This one is a little tricky but we can do it! The number after the HUNDREDTHS place is 9, round up! Since the number in the HUNDREDTHS place is 9, when we round up it becomes 10, which means we have to move to the TENTHS place and add a digit. It also becomes 10, so we have to move to the ONES place and add a digit. Our final answer is $11.00!
