For positive woodburning, use transfer paper to transfer your chosen pattern onto light-colored wood. Then, burn over the lines of the pattern with your pyrography tool. Transferring patterns for negative space woodburning. For negative space woodburning, rst prepare the wood’s surface to darken it. Use a shading tip or the ame of a torch to char the wood’s surface. When the background is complete, use white transfer paper to transfer your chosen pattern onto the darkened wood. Alternatively, cover the back of the original pattern with white chalk, blow away the excess dust, place the pattern directly on the darkened wood with the chalk side down, and trace the design.
