Speeding up As you see, the comet increases at speed as it reaches its destination. Centripetal forces pull the comet down in a circle towards the center with the help of inertia. Its speed will increase depending on the gravitational pull on the comet. In space, take this space shuttle for example. This shuttle will not slow down when in orbit because, one of many examples, air pressure. There is no air pressure in space so that is one of the many reasons why this shuttle will not slow down.
