WHY WE CHOSE GERMANY Stalin’s regimes were harsher than Hitler’s. Factors such as living standards and education and would greatly affect the entire family. We found that Stalin’s dictatorship would have a negative impact on the lives of Seffi Aksyonova and her parents. UNDER STALIN… The Great Terror (1934-1938) ★ 1935 was during the period of The Great Terror. There were purges and show trials to remove any domestic opposition to Stalin and the Soviet government. The secret police arrested, questioned and forced people to inform against their friends and family who voiced opposition against Stalin. Peasants, factory workers, intellectuals and ordinary people were arrested to prevent them from organising opposition to Stalin’s rule and many were either killed on the spot or sent to forced labour camps. If they moved to Russia, both Seffi’s parents, especially Seffi’s mother would be in danger should they display the slightest indication of anti- Stalin sentiments, or if the government knew that Seffi’s mother was a teacher.
