Having not hosted Otago at Westpac Stadium since 2009, it’s my pleasure to welcome you all here tonight for what I’m sure is going to be a fantastic match. Tonight’s game marks the halfway point of this year’s ITM Cup competition, with both teams needing a win to stabilise their positions on the championship ladder as the semi-finals draw near. Wellington and Otago have a rich history in the National Provincial Championship, which started in 1883. In 1989, the Mike Gibson Memorial Trophy was introduced in honour of the Otago and Wellington midfielder who passed away, aged 27. Tonight, the trophy will be on the line again, and it is my pleasure to welcome Mike’s family here tonight, who are representing their son and brother. I would like to welcome the Otago team, management and fans to the capital. It’s great to have you here after a six-year hiatus, and I hope you enjoy your brief stay in Wellington.
