The White House The White House, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, is one of the most famous places in the country, because it is the home of the president of the United States of America. It is known as the White House because the entirety of the exterior is painted white, which represents goodness and purity. This building is not only the home of the president, it is also the main workplace for the president. The building itself was designed by James Hoban, and was designed to look similar to a Neoclassical building. It was constructed from 1792 to 1800. This means that the building is 214 years old!The first president to occupy the building was Thomas Jefferson in the year of 1801. The White House was actually burned in 1814 during the War of 1812. After this incident, the interior and exterior were refurbished. This iconic building is located in the heart of our nation’s capitol, Washington D.C. The White House is also part of Pierre Charles L'Enfant’s vision of the capital of the United States, and he imagined what the building would look like before it was even built. L’ Enfant composed the first sketches of the National Mall, along with other famous buildings in D.C. The White House was a very large construction project, and it took over 8 years to build the exterior. When Thomas Jefferson moved in, the interior wasn’t even finished yet. The White House is open for tours daily, but it was closed for construction earlier this year. Addison Liang
