The Week in Review Prospect vs Wheeling Varsity 45 – 42 Sophomore 47 – 42 Freshman A 13 – 6 Freshman B vs Warren 8 – 28 Knights Seize Victory, Defeat Wheeling Lets Go Knights! On Friday night at home, Prospect's sophomore football team faced adversity: behind by 1 point 41-42, trailing for the first time in the game with 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and the ball on their own 46 yard line. The Knights needed to score, with not much time to do it. QB Josh Kern stepped into the huddle and first thing he told the offense was not what they were going to do, but instead, he focused his players on how they were going to do it saying, "I told everybody to be calm, just take it play by play, one step at a time, drive down the field to win this game." The first step was a 9 yard pass to Zach Gleason along the right sideline to the Wheeling 45. "It was really loud and I couldn't hear the count," Zach explained, "As soon as the ball was snapped, I saw that the corner was already dropping back and I hitched up really quick. I saw he was coming at me when I caught the ball so I got out of bounds to stop the clock." Now, with 43 seconds left, another pass was called, but this one turned out differently. Kern rolled out to his left but kept the ball, sprinting down the field for a 20 yard gain. "It was a pass but the play broke down and I had to run the ball because everyone was covered." Josh said. That play took 6 seconds, 37 seconds remained. With the ball on the Wheeling 25, Kern handed off to Dante Cecala. Dante describes what happed: "The play called was 'Slam' and I was thinking that I need to take care of my responsibility and do my job. The line did what they were supposed to do, it worked out, and we scored." Cecala's 25 yard touchdown run put Prospect up by 5 points with 30 seconds left in the game. The scoring drive took 17 seconds and covered 54 yards in three plays, one step at a time. After the kickoff, the defense shut Wheeling down allowing one yard on three plays and sealed a thrilling 47-42 victory for the Knights. Setting up the cardiac finish was a game marked by big plays, tough defense, an offensive line that functioned as a powerful unit and outstanding effort on special teams. To start the game on the opening kickoff, Tom Wharton dropped the Wheeling ball carrier for almost no gain at the Wildcats 39. On second and 10, Vince Lobono led a swarming defense for no gain on the play. On third and 10, Alex Palczewski led a pack of Knights defenders again for no gain. Prospect took over after a short Wheeling punt at midfield and Dante Cecala ran twice for 29 yards. Then, Josh Kern gained 9 yards on his first carry and 13 yards for a touchdown on his second carry, with Cecala providing the lead block at the goal line. Kicker Jeremy Potratz, holder Chase Cummings and long snapper Evan Sadlon converted their first of five PATs in the game to put Prospect up 7-0. Wheeling started their second drive on their own 38 and went in for a score with 2:40 left in the first quarter. The 2-point attempt failed when Anthony Liva went up and deflected the pass in the end zone. 7-6 Prospect. After the kickoff, the Knights started at their own 29 and needed just one play. Dante Cecala ripped an amazing run, bolting through the line behind great blocking and sprinting past the Wheeling defensive backfield for a 71 yard touchdown. A Potratz PAT made the score 14-6. Wheeling then kept the ball for more than 5 minutes and tied up the game with a touchdown 14-14. (Cont’d on pg 6)
