POST REGISTER At Pocatello, senior quarterback Jake Thorn- berry rushed for 264 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, lifting the Idaho Falls High School football team to a 40-30 nonconference win over Pocatello on Friday at Holt rena. The Tigers trailed 30-27 entering the fourth, but Thornberry broke off TD runs of 6 and 45 yards to help the Tigers earn their first win of the season. Thornberry also had a 51-yard TD run in the second quarter. Brennon Witt got the Tigers started, scoring on a 5-yard TD run in the first quarter. Connor Cammack caught an 8-yard touch- down pass from Thorn- berry in the second quarter and Christian Simon added a 3-yard scoring run before halftime. Simon finished with 18 carries for 125 yards. The Tigers (1-3) open conference play Friday against Hillcrest at Thunder Stadium. BLACKFOOT 42, CENTURY 7: At Blackfoot, the Broncos gave up the first seven points before scoring 42 unanswered to earn an easy 4A District 5-6 win over Century. Kaden Iverson intercept- ed a Pacen Hayes pass and returned it 22 yards for an touchdown nine seconds into the game. Blackfoot didn’t waste any time answering when Cody Pearson returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a score to tie the game. The Broncos poured it on after that, getting a 4-yard run from Damon Bodkin and a 13-yard pass from Hayes to Matt Peterson in the first quarter to go up 21-7. Hayes added two scoring runs in the second quar- ter and Konnor Robinson closed out the scoring with a 30-yard TD run. Bodkin finished with 83 yards rushing on nine car- ries, while Hayes completed 7 of 13 passes for 93 yards. The Broncos (4-0, 1-0) host Madison on Friday. SUGAR-SALEM 55, MARSH VALLEY 0: At Derek Ostermiller ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns and Sugar-Salem shook off last week’s blowout loss to Snake River by rolling to a nonconference win. The Diggers led just 7-0 after the first quarter, thanks to a 1-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Denton Belnap. Sugar-Salem broke things open in the second, get- ting a 33-yard TD run from quarterback Ethan Arnold, a 35-yard field goal from Jacob Baggett, a 34-yard TD pass from Arnold to Ryan Hawkes and an 82-yard TD run from Ostermiller. Benton also returned a blocked punt for a touch- down in the third quarter, while Ostermiller (28 yards) and Colby Ingram (2 yards) had touchdown runs and Baggett added a 39-yard field goal. The Diggers (2-2) are off next week, and return to action at Jerome on Oct. 3. TETON 35, SALMON 6: At Driggs, Teton held Salmon scoreless for three quarters en route to its first win of the season. The Redskins led 21-0 at halftime. “Our kids took a huge step forward tonight and were able to play a little cleaner game,” Teton coach Brody Birch said. “We’ve kinda had some high expec- tations and obviously played some really good football teams in Jackson and Shelley and didn’t play well at all last week against Bear Lake. We were relieved to go out and play a good, clean football game.” “They just completely dominated us,” Salmon coach Ken Miner said. “Credit goes to them.” Junior quarterback Freeman McCashland came up big for Teton, complet- ing 12 of 14 passes for 234 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He found Austin Jacobs for two first-half touchdowns, and Jacobs finished with four receptions for 65 yards. Josh Phillips led Teton in rushing with 106 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Justin Wade also had two touchdowns — one rushing and one receiving — and fin- ished with three receptions for 132 yards and 86 yards on three carries. Both teams return to con- ference action Friday, with Teton (1-3) playing at South Fremont and Salmon (1-2) playing at Ririe. BUTTE COUNTY 36, GLENNS FERRY 12: At Arco, Butte County junior running back Jeremie Hjelm racked up 231 yards on 20 carries for three touchdowns in a nonconference win. Two of his touchdowns were before halftime, when Butte County led 18-12. Butte County coach Sam Thorngren said Hjelm and fellow running back Zac Harrell have been big playmakers this season after missing the second half of last season with injuries. “He had 12 tackles on defense too,” Thorngren said of Hjelm. “He was huge tonight.” The Pirates trailed 12-6 after the first quarter, but shut down Glenns Ferry the rest of the way. Thorngren said the Pilots surprised the Pirates. “They came out and ran a completely different offense than they ran the first couple weeks of the sea- son,” Thorngren said. “We had to make some in-game adjustments.” Harrell finished with 53 yards on six carries, one catch for 22 yards and a touchdown. Schooner Collins had 37 yards on six carries and one catch for 11 yards. Quarterback Jon Isham completed four of five passes for 44 yards and rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Butte County (3-0) plays its conference opener Friday at Challis. ABERDEEN 64, RIRIE 0: At Ririe, Aberdeen jumped to a 36-0 halftime lead and rolled to a shutout win over Ririe. The Tigers scored 30 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third quarter. Ririe coach Josh Stewart said Aberdeen wore down the Bulldogs with its double wing. “Coming in, we thought Aberdeen would be real- ly good,” Stewart said. “They’re one of the best teams in the state. They were able to wear us down.” Ririe (0-4) plays its Nuclear Conference opener Friday at home vs. Salmon. ROCKLAND 47, WATERSPRINGS 27: At Ammon, Rockland built on a 21-7 halftime lead to hand Watersprings a loss in its conference opener. Watersprings coach John Yadon said the Warriors had the Bulldogs on third and long and fourth and long numerous times, but couldn’t keep them off the scoreboard. “When you’re not stop- ping anybody on defense, you can’t afford to not score on offense,” Yadon said. “It’s definitely a little frustrating.” Daniel Buell had a big day for the Warriors, piling up 113 yards and two touch- downs on nine carries. He also had three catches for 155 yards and a touchdown. “Daniel Buell, he tore it up,” Yadon said. “He had a bazillion tackles, too.” Mark Mathison complet- ed five of 10 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions and had 16 yards on nine carries. Uriah Yadon had 41 yards on eight carries and one catch for 15 yards. Watersprings (0-4, 0-1) next plays Friday at Mackay. MACKAY 48, GREENLEAF FRIENDS 6: At Hagerman, Jacob Green threw for two touchdowns, ran for another, had 15 tack- les and an interception to lead Mackay past Greenleaf in a nonconference game at Hagerman High School. Wes Rocoe added 95 yards receiving and two touchdowns, 55 yards rush- ing and two more scores while adding two intercep- tions. Klancy Krenka led the Miners with 16 tackles. “We played well,” Mackay coach Jack McKelvey said. “We did what we had to against a team that’s down.” The Miners (2-2) open conference play next week with a home game against Watersprings. NORTH GEM 28, CLARK COUNTY 22 (OT): At Dubois, North Gem rallied for a conference win in over- time over Clark County. The Bobcats led 14-0 after one quarter and 22-8 at halftime, but the Cowboys held them scoreless the rest of the way. A 6-yard touchdown run by North Gem’s Dallin Lloyd in the fourth quarter followed by a failed two-point con- version prompted overtime. Lloyd’s 4-yard touchdown run in overtime — his third touchdown of the night — sealed the game. Clark County (2-1, 0-1) next plays Friday at home against Billings Christian. PRESTON 14, SNAKE RIVER 12: At Preston, the Indians stopped a Snake River two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to hand the Panthers their first loss. Preston trailed 6-0 enter- ing the fourth, but got a 5-yard TD run from Matt Willard, a 1-yard TD run from Kaleb Talbot and two extra points from RJ Harris to take a 14-6 lead. Snake River scored on a 3-yard run from Payden Dalley late, but the two-point conversion failed. MALAD 48, NORTH FREMONT 12: At Malad, North Fremont dropped a nonconference game to Malad. No other details were available. CHALLIS 78, GRACE 64: At Grace, Challis won a shootout over conference opponent Grace. No other details were available. POST REGISTER At St. Anthony, the South Fremont High School football knocked off Firth 27-26 in over- time Friday night for its first win over the Cougars from Bingham County since 2011. The Cougars in red had the first possession of overtime, and quar- terback Junior Gonzalez found Tyler Barney for the eventual game- winner. Firth scored on its next possession and went for a two-point con- version to win it, but a penalty called it back. South Fremont stopped the next two-point con- version for the one-point win. “It was a huge win for our program,” South Fremont coach Chad Hill said. “Firth’s a good team. For us to come back and beat them … it was awesome. Our guys kept believing.” Knotted at 14 in the fourth quarter, Firth scored with 45 seconds left to make it 20-14 after missing the extra point. South Fremont evened up the game at 20 with a touchdown with 2.8 seconds left and Firth blocked the extra point to prompt overtime. Hill said Garrett Rem- ington had a great game, catching a 75-yard touch- down pass and making some pass deflections on defense. “A couple times our drives stalled,” Firth coach Keith Drake said. “The difference was just mistakes, but the kids fought hard.” South Fremont (3-1) opens Mountain Rivers Conference play on Friday at home against Teton. Firth (2-2) has a bye next week. B y JEFF PINKHAM jpinkham@postregister.com POCATELLO — Some- times after you lose a foot- ball game, all you can do is shake your head, tip your cap and look forward to the next week. That was the position of Madison High School foot- ball coach Mitch Buck fol- lowing Friday’s 37-20 loss to top-ranked Highland at Holt Arena. While Buck was pleased with how his Bobcats performed, he readily acknowledged the Rams are in a league of their own. “They’re really good,” Buck said of Highland. “They have nice big offen- sive linemen, nice big defensive linemen, nice big linebackers. They just have a nice football team, but we do, too. We have to fight and scrap, but we have a couple playmakers that are pretty good, and I think we can sharpen up and be a little better so we’re more competitive against a team like that.” The Bobcats threw a scare into the Rams right off the bat, forcing a High- land punt on its first drive, then putting together a four-play drive that ended with a 16-yard TD pass from Konner Stoneberg to Josh Crane. “They came ready to play,” Highland coach Gino Mariani said. “It looked like we were going through the motions, and I don’t know why the kids were so tenta- tive. We settled down after that and made some plays.” The first of those plays was a thing of beauty, a 61-yard TD strike from Dakota Tillotson to Connor Harding that tied the score at 7 with 6:26 left in the first quarter. Highland picked off Stoneberg on the first play of the next possession and then scored again on a 2-yard Tillotson run. Madison struggled to find any offense the rest of the half, and Highland built a two-score lead late in the half when Tillotson bought time and then found Kamron Farnsworth wide open in the right side of the end zone. Madison cut the lead to 21-14 on the first drive of the second half when Crane caught his second TD catch of the game, this one from 24 yards out. But Tillotson took over from there, com- pleting 14 straight passes at one point before finishing 22 of 32 for 359 yards and four touchdowns. “They’ve got a quarter- back who creates opportu- nities,” Buck said. “But it’s the time he has to throw it more than anything.” Stoneberg and Crane put on a show of their own. The junior quarter- back completed 19 of 33 passes for 234 yards and the two touchdowns. Crane hauled in seven passes for 112 yards and two scores, and also returned a kick 92 yards for a touchdown. And Crane wasn’t ready to crown the Rams just yet. “I think we can beat them, and the next time we play them I think we will,” Crane said. “If we start to clean up some of the little things and keep working hard in practice, we’ll be fine.” The Bobcats (2-2) play at Blackfoot on Frida while the Rams (4-0) take the long trip north to face Coeur d’Alene in a rematch of last year’s 5A state title game the same night. n Madison put an early scare into Highland before falling 37-20 at Holt.
