Williams Construction started operations in 1960, the construction industry in Barbados and the Caribbean was very different to what it is today. Then, larger more complex projects were the domain of the overseas contractor, as they were seen as having the expertise and experience necessary for the successful completion of the contract. During that period, international construction companies such as Costain, Miller Buckley, Mitchell Construction, McAlpine and Wimpey all won tenders for work on the island. At the time we were a small, dynamic outfit proving our worth, and we gained invaluable first hand experience as a sub-contractor with some of these giants of construction. The levelling of the Deep Water Harbour with Costain and the resurfacing of the runway at the Grantley Adams International Airport with Wimpey were two such opportunities that added to our expertise and brought us recognition. The role of main contractor allowed us to stand out on our own. The filling in of the swamp at Heywoods for a hotel devel- opment; the preparation of the site at Windsor Lodge for the construction of the new telephone company headquarters; the construction of the Durants Golf Course, subsequently redeveloped and now called the Barbados Golf Club, and the preparation of the oil drilling locations for the Barbados National Oil Corporation were significant early projects for C. O. Williams Construction. The creation of infrastructure for housing developments played another major role in the Company’s growth, with developers such as J. B. Corbin, Major Ronald Stoute and Mr. Pillersdorf being in the forefront of this field. It was during this time that we brought the first concrete kerb-laying machine to the island, and mechanised a time consuming process. We next turned our attention to road building, and it quickly became our forte with the construction in 1981 of the Spring Garden Highway, followed by the St. Barnabas Highway, the
