As she entered the huge auditorium she felt so small! Then when she saw hundreds of red seats for the audience and the spotlights on the stage her heart pounded so hard she thought it might come right out of her chest!! Her mom asked, “Do you need any help?” She wanted to reply, “Yes, take me home! This is too scary!” But instead said, “No, you’re supposed to stay in the audience, we’ve gone over this many times, I’ll be okay.” Getting more and more nervous backstage, made it hard to concentrate on the directions. She should have asked her teacher to repeat the directions but she lacked the confidence. Her groups’ turn was first. YIKES, with a pounding heart she went on stage and WHOOPS she was wearing the wrong shoes! This might not sound like a big deal, but think about it… black TAP SHOES make a lot of noise with the pieces of metal on the bottom of the shoe and pink Ballet Shoes are as quiet as mice. She was the only one Tap Tap Tapping in her black tap shoes! Now her face turned red, she started sweating and it was a miracle she made it through the number without crying! She had to dance like a beautiful ballerina with LOUD shoes on! She wished the floor would have opened up and swallowed her. She had trouble thinking what moves she was supposed to be doing because the tap dancing routine, not the ballet routine was popping in her head with these shoes on. She kept looking at the other girls and copying so she was doing the moves a second or two later than everybody else. She heard a little laughter in the audience! When it was finally over the ballerina’s and Sally walked off the stage and the teacher looked at her with disgust. She was so ashamed. Some of the other kids laughed. Wishing she could leave, she realized she had one more dance piece! At least I’ll wear the correct shoes! Monday at school Sally was reading again during SSR when another loud whistle was blown through somebody's lips. She was bold enough to look directly at Humphrey and put her finger to her lips motioning him to be quiet. He glared at her and made the same motion. Mrs. Robinson called them both to her desk. “Okay you two, who made that noise?” They answered at exactly the same time. Sally said, “Humphrey whistled.” Humphrey said, “I don’t know who whistled.” with an exaggerated shrug of his shoulders. This, of course, meant someone was lying. Sally surprised herself and decided to speak up. She was sick of being misunderstood. With a pounding heart she simply stated again, “Humphrey whistled.” She tried to look calm but this was scarey. Everyone is going to hate me for being a tattle-tale! Humphrey might actually hurt me! Why me? Humphrey seemed more shocked than Sally! His mouth hung open and he opened his arms and shrugged his shoulders and giving it away without thinking, “Why did you have to tell on me?” he whined. Can you picture the scene? Humphrey just told on himself! Mrs Robinson stood up gritted her teeth and demanded, “Humphrey, I need to speak to you in the hall.” As Sally walked back to her reading spot kids were smiling at her. John gave her a “thumb’s up.” and Pam whispered, “You really taught him a lesson.” Laying in bed that night Sally felt peaceful. Humphrey hadn’t done anything to bully her. It was obvious he was the one who whistled and everybody knew it. She hoped she wouldn’t be nick named a tattle-tale and didn’t think that would happen because everybody else seemed to support her - she could feel their thankfulness. It had felt so good to tell her mother what happened. She knew now that she could stick up for herself when she needed to and it actually felt good, right, correct and that made her feel peaceful. Then she had a giggle before she fel asleep. Thinking back to her tap shoes and how funny it must have been to the audience made her laugh a little, then remembering the look on Humphrey’s face when she told the truth - sticking up for herself but getting Humphrey in trouble! She tried to whistle. WHOOOOOOOO, just air, no whistling sound. She really wished she could whistle! Then she laughed again, why didn’t I show Mrs. Robinson that I can’t whistle? Oh well, I learned that I can stand up for myself when I need to!
