By Rebecca Liaw Last year was difficult for our newly instated Theta Chapter. Starting a new group on campus is always difficult, but for nineteen extremely busy film majors, getting Delta Kappa Alpha off the ground was its own uphill battle. After Spring 2014, most of our Founders graduated, so now Theta was being helmed mostly by newly initiated actives. Then after a summer of internships, coffee shop and retail jobs, film pre-production, and going to National Convention, the Fall of 2014 semester was upon us. For the second time, DKA was holding recruitment on the LMU campus, and from rushees to actives, we were all a bit nervous. Worried questions flooded all of our minds. What if no one wanted to join DKA? What if we didn’t have enough new members and the university shuts us down? What if the pizza delivery person got lost on his way to our social mixer? But most of our fears faded quickly and without conflict. People liked us, they really liked us! We had a good amount of students visit us at our film school’s kick off mixer, at our own information sessions, and individually around campus. PowerPoints were presented, conversations were had, and of course, pizza was eaten. Soon, the applications flowed in. Each recruitment event seemed to bring out more and more amazing people looking to join DKA.Having to cut down the applicant pool was another challenge in and of itself. But the whole process reminded me why I joined DKA in the first place. As I looked for the jewels and the Tripod values in each rushee, I also looked within myself to see if I was being the most humble, honest, and reliable fraternity sister I could be.Even when it was one in the morning, and we were examining the characteristics of all the rushes, and how they would fit into DKA, I felt like my own jewels and values were being refreshed and strengthened. I could say with all sincerity that Delta Kappa Alpha has given me honor and distinction. Recruitment was certainly not easy, but it was a challenge that I am proud we overcame in order to form the amazing Pledge Class we have today. Robert Frost once said, “The best way out is always through”, and by Herb Farmer’s legacy, did we make it through! This semester, Theta chapter had its first interchapter event with Alpha chapter at USC. Upon arriving at the USC Cinemanor, we saw our brothers and sister set up a cute outdoor area on the pavement with chairs, food, dim lighting, and board games. While getting to know them to each personally, we also talked about the differences in our schools and within our chapters, bonding over junk food and Yahtzee. We then took a tour of the Cinemanor, a house that proved to be much more impressive than I ever could have imagined. It was enormous, reaching four stories tall. Inside was an abundance of bedrooms, beautiful wood panels on the walls, and plenty of cinema gadgets and gizmos that lingered about – a home fitting for a collective of artists. Spending time with Alpha chapter for the first time was a great experience. It was awesome getting to meet our brothers and sisters from another school. I hope that in the future we continue to engage in many more interchapter events with our local brothers and sisters as well as DeKA’s from around the country.
