Achieve with us. FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THE PRESIDENT Inclusive Workplaces Produce Success Stories for Employees Once separated into “sheltered workshops,” people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are now valued members of the local workforce and have developed last- ing friendships with their supervisors and co-workers. The Arc of Howard County supports the efforts of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to find jobs where the work meets the individual’s needs and the individual meets the employer’s needs. Employment opportunities range according to the interests, skills and talents of the job seekers, and The Arc staff members are always trying to find the perfect fit. The 2013-2014 Annual Report features the stories of four individuals and their successful employment experiences. While Cameron uses his technology skills to keep the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab running efficiently, Susie uses her humor and people skills to make sure everyone leaves Patrick’s Hair Design happy. Chris assists the kitchen at Wegmans by making sure they always have clean supplies, and David efficiently gets each car ready for service appointments at Ourisman in Clarksville. The four are enthusiastic, proficient and hard-working employees. Their stories are also the stories of their supervisors and managers and co-workers, who provide natural supports and an inclusive work environment. The companies where they work have strong ties to The Arc. Some of their team members serve now or have served on the The Arc Board of Directors, they are donors and sponsors of The Arc’s events and provide volunteers for various activities. We are grateful for their ongoing support. Elsewhere in the Annual Report, you will see highlights of the past year, including photos from our signature Choco- late Ball and other activities. Our contributors are listed, too. Seeing the happy faces of sponsors and all the names of people who have made financial commitments to The Arc is very gratifying. Our schedule of upcoming activities is listed in the back of the Annual Report. We hope to see you at an event in the near future. Thank you for all you do to support The Arc and the people it serves. Carol A.
