R 2 | Lyon County ReporterJune 4, 2014 The Lyon County Re- publican Party Central Committee gave Lyon County voters a great op- portunity to hear from a majority of the candidates whose names are appear- ing on the June 2 primary ballot during a public fo- rum at Forster Community Center May 27. U.S. Senate candidates Scott Schaben, Matt Whita- ker, Mark Jacobs, Sam Clo- vis and Joni Ernst each addressed the crowd, high- lighting why they were run- ning for the Senate seat be- ing vacated by Tom Harkin. Prior to the Senate candidates taking the mi- crophone, Iowa House of Representatives candidates John Wills, Kevin Klaah- sen and Kevin Wolfswinkel spoke to the crowd. Lyon County Treasurer candidates also introduced themselves to the potential voters and explained what qualied them for the job. Robin Fastert provided patriotic music, Emily DeJong read the Gettysburg Ad- dress and Kevin Klaahsen, candidate for the Iowa House of Representatives, gave the keynote address. Klaahsen helped an- swer the question “why do we visit graves on Memorial Day?” Veterans who passed away during 2013 had a ag added to the avenue of ags at the area cemeteries. To kick o the summer at the library, the Friends sponsored a viewing of the hit Disney movie “Frozen” Thursday, May 29. Nearly 100 youth, parents and caregivers packed the basement at the library to enjoy popcorn and refreshments during the movie (above).
