2 Both boys pause a moment before speaking. "So, Kandor, when do we leave?" Nick asks. He always uses my last name whenever he talks to or about me. He says it’s way cooler than my first name, Michael. "Once I finish packing," I say, stuffing more necessities into my backpack. I look out the corner of my eye and see that Sam is going through Nick's backpack, pulling things out then putting them back in. He pauses on one object for a moment, then speaks. "Do we really need deodorant for this trip?" Sam says, his thick accent bouncing off the concrete walls. I see Nick give him the stink eye as I shush him. "Thats not deoderant, Sammy," Nick says, a grin playing across his face, "Let's just keep it at this though: it keeps the food in and the danger out. Its a little trick that I cooked up myself," Nick’s deep voice sounds sinister in the dark, reverberating in and around my head. I pick up my backpack and toss it out the window onto the grass, Sam and Nick following the gesture. "So, game plan inside, or outside?" I ask. Nick and Sam look at each other, seemingly having a silent conversation going on between them. As I watch, I imagine what they are thinking: SAM: What do you think? NICK: I don't know... outside? Or can you keep your big mouth shut long enough so we're not heard? SAM: Hey! Watch it buddy! Remember what happened to Mike when he took my lunch and threw it in the trash in kindergarten? He ended up in the hospital for three days. NICK: Thats because he was the smallest, scrawniest kid in the world and you squashed him like a pancake with your body weight. SAM: Are you saying that I'm fat? NICK: No. I'm saying that you were muscle and he was skin and bones. And it's a wonder you’re still friends.
