! ! Today on April 27th, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln suspended the right of habeas corpus. For those who don’t know habeas corpus is that a United States citizen has the right to go before a jury and judge before being sentenced of a crime. One person named John Merryman spoke out against this suspension and was arrested and put into jail. Merryman is the State Treasurer of Maryland. He is pictured in the image to the right. I personally think that the President should not have done this since it is against the basic rights that the United States was founded on. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
