Become a Supporter of Manly Nippers which is part of Manly Life Saving Club. Manly Life Saving Club has a rich history dating from 1903. Before 1902 it was illegal to swim in the surf in daylight hours. Once this changed, bathing became popular and with it growing crowds who had never been in the surf before. Unfortunately, people drowned and rescues became commonplace with the local experienced surfers being the ones called upon to do the rescuing. The birth of Manly Surf and Life Saving Club was imminent. Soon after, there were regular mass rescues, and with this came the beach flags, patrols and towers. By 1911, the real lifesavers in the club split from the surfers, and Manly Life Saving Club was born. Manly Life Saving Club aims to ensure that Manly Beach is a safe place to swim: to prevent the loss of life, and to develop and educate our youth. We have also developed and maintained a deep commitment to the community, our members and our youth. This is done without fuss, with compassion and with dignity and this commitment has helped numerous members, and other community groups and organisations when they needed it most. It is this community participation and youth development that is the essence of our club. Success in sport is also a prominent theme. Our members continue to progress to elite levels in Surf Lifesaving, Ironman, Olympic swimming and Kayaking. Manly continues to rank amongst the top Australian clubs at National and State level. Today, we have over 2000 members in total, with almost 1400 of these people holding a SLSA award in an area of surf lifesaving. In the prior season, patrolling members clocked up almost 16,000 patrol hours, with more than 7000 recorded preventable actions, and 87 rescues. It is reported that an average of 200 lives are saved per year by Manly life savers. No lives were lost on our beach while members were on patrol.
