www.lsa.umich.edu/german g d s Letter from the Chair Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures 2 I one were to re-read the letters rom the chair’s oce o past years, one would surely nd that the weather is one o the themes that show up consistently. No wonder, the rst letter o the academic year goes out when the all colors are most striking, and the second one in spring, as we are transitioning into summer. The weather may even be more on our minds this year than previously. A harsh and long winter lies behind us – UM experienced its rst snow day since 1978. And as I am writing we are enjoying glorious, beautiul summer weather. Yet we have much more to report on than the weather, rest assured. Here are some highlights o these past months. First and oremost on my mind is our thriving undergraduate program. This past semester the delightul news reached me that German is now one o the most popular minors among UM students, second only to Mathematics. 185 enrolled students in March 2014 are most impressive. A new Lecturer position we hope to ll will, among other things, bring new pedagogical ocus to the German Language House (Max Kade House). And generous gits we have been promised as a department will benet our students’ internships and studies abroad. In order to keep our program the lively place it is we want to appeal to uture students. We are lucky in that German Day, alre ady UM’s largest outreach activity, brought more high school students enrolled in German classes to campus this year than ever beore: 1 085! A truly antastic number. I you have never experienced German Day, the atmosphere is hard to describe: the Rackham Amphitheatr e teeming with lie, the sounds o perormances and recitations seeping into the corridors, myriad groups carrying their theatric al props or musical instruments rom one location to another, and groups o high school students swarming across campus. It’s magical! Good news also rom our graduate program: Sara Jackson, a ormer student o the department, garnered the university’s much coveted ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award or her “Staging the Deadlier Sex: Dangerous Women in German: Text and Perormance at the Fin de Siècle.” This is a rst or the department. We are delighted that the work o one o our grad student s has ound recognition in this way. Last but not least, our aculty is in the news. The April 9 edition o the Michigan Daily eatured an article entitled “Stafer’s Pick” that honored our own Andrei Markovits as the university’s best proessor: “Through Pro. Markovits’ class (on Comparative Polit ics), I learned that the best proessor is … the one who takes the time to impart their knowledge through real interaction with student s and a love o sharing knowledge.” Feel ree to read the ull article at http://www.michigandaily.com/arts/best-proessor-andrei-mar kovits. There is also news I need to share with you that lls me with sadness. Two o our dear aculty colleagues, Vanessa Agnew and Ka der Konuk, moved to Germany where they took up teaching positions. To be sure, it is good to have riends in araway places, and we certainly plan to stay in touch and cooperate also in the uture. I am delighted to be writing to you, the riends o the department. I hope that you will enjoy immersing yoursel in the lie o the department. The next letter rom the chair will come rom Johannes von Moltke, my successor. Please, join me in welcoming him i n the oce. Wishing you a most beautiul summer, Dear Friends, Helmut Puf Proessor o History and o German Studies [pufh@umich.edu ]
