Hannah Kampos- Green Ms Crawford The film Australia directed by Baz Luhrmann was set in the late 1930s to early 40s on the break of World War II. It sets the audience on a journey through the Northern part of Australia and establishes its unique features through the story of English foreigner, Lady Ashely. Although the film accurately depicts Australia’s north, foreigners may have an unrealistic perspective of Australia as a whole. In this report I will be discussing how the film Australia is primarily a Hollywood representation of the country Australia through comparing climate and the Indigenous people. Australia’s climate The film Australia accurately portrays the climate of the northern part of Australia, however is not representative of Australia as a whole. Australia is a large island continent in the southern hemisphere with a diverse range of climate zones. These vary from tropical regions in the north to temperate regions in the south. Australia is located in the Tropics, the zone between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn. Because of this position all parts of Australia has warm weather, especially the North as it is closer to the Equator. Australia is divided up into six different climate zones, which include Equatorial, Tropical, Temperate, Desert, Grass and Subtropical zones. From these climate zones there are more classifications in relation to the seasons such as “rainforest” and ‘savanna.’ Since Australia is one of the largest continents in the world, this is why it has such a diverse climate, ranging from below zero degrees in the snowy mountains to high forties in the desert areas. The diversity is clearly illustrated in the rainfall chart shown below from the year 2013. Australia’s rainfall chart 1 st January to 31 st December 2013
