That was the first and probably least painful incidents. He apologized that time, the time after, and many times after that. The more “accidents” there were, the more “I’m sorry”’s and “it was just an accident”’s he gave me the less meaningful they became. Now as I heard him yelling at little Rachel I realized how much of a routine this has became. Seth always came home as an emotionless wreck. When he smiled at you it was a cold smile, like a corpse that had died smiling, empty emotionless eyes, and droopy lips that looked like a drunken frown in disguise. It used to scare me, now its just routine. “You’ve been bad again!” I heard him shout, a voice that was once dripping with love was now only used for hate and bringing pain to others. I could hear a chair crash in the basement. I ran down the stairs, Sam was lying on the floor unconscious and Rachel was off to the side with a bloody nose. Carter was cowering in the shadows. Seth turned to me, “What are you doing? You think you can just do what you want now? I own you, you go by me! You should’ve stayed upstairs.” His words were loud and drowned with hate. “Stop this!” I pleaded, knowing nothing was getting through to him I rush upstairs. “Where are you going?” He shouted after me up the stairs. I could hear his heavy footstep thudding along behind me. I slammed the door to the basement closed wanting to look for the key to get outside. I rushed into the bedroom closing and pushing the nearby dresser in front of the door. I checked the pillowcases, the jewelry boxes and boxes in the closet. Finally I dug up our wedding box, my dress was in there along with pictures and the champagne bottle we opened as soon as we got home. As I dug through the pictures I wondered what had happened. He looked so happy and when he looked at me it was with love, now he was pounding on the door threatening to come in and kill me. As I was reloading the box I saw the topper for our wedding cake, it was in a small glass container and tucked under one of the swans wings was the key. I opened the box and snatched it out.
