Coláiste na sCeilge 2014 - 2 - Hopeully you can fnd a warm and sunny spot to enjoy our magazine. A big thank you to everyone who played a part in this year’s magazine. You shine. We have so many truly wonderul students here that we need to celebrate. Those o you who have done someone a kindness, kept to the rules, done your best and been courteous, we celebrate you. Teaching and learning is our raison d’etre and we were delighted that Melissa O’ Sullivan won an All Ireland Scholarship Award and that Jamie Sugrue won the Reid Scholarship or their success in the Leaving Cert and that so many o our students achieved the points they needed or their third level choices. Our students enjoyed tremendous success at this year’s Kerry Education and Training Board Awards where Maria NÍ Chorcora won the gold medal or Best Overall Academic Student having achieved 7 A1s in her Leaving Cert. Melissa O Sullivan won Best Languages, Arts & Social Sciences Student. Stephanie Stretton won the School Academic Award. Anthony Casey won Best LCA Student. Ciara Ní Dhálaigh won Best Student in the Junior Cert Oral Irish Exams. Ciara Buckley won the School Leadership Award. Also Joseph Cunningham won the School Academic award at Junior Certifcate. We recently had a Department o Education Inspection in English and we were delighted with the very positive report: “A very good standard o teaching and learning was observed overall. This included numerous examples o teaching and learning o a very high quality.” We are delighted too at the wonderul work being done by our literacy and numeracy team and the learning initiatives taking place outside o regular school hours: Irish classes, PAL Maths, Project Maths and Coder Dojo. We are delighted or Niamh O Connell, who won the University o Limerick National Essay Writing Competition or Secondary Schools and or Dervla Donegan who won the Pharma Chemical Award or the best Chemistry project at this year’s Sci Fest where Coláiste na Sceilge also won the prize or Best School and Teacher 2014. Dervla also received a certifcate o excellence in the Bord Gáis Scene Writing Competition. Our students’ visits to Caherciveen hospital, their work with the Kerry Pilgrimage to Lourdes and with the Skelligs Stars, their participation in the Cahirciveen Mission and in the Trócaire Lenten Campaign are just some examples o their active role in our community. We were delighted to see such a large attendance at our Christmas Carol Service - the choir have since achieved third place in the Munster School Choirs junior category - and at our TY play,”The School Tour.” Our TY programme goes rom strength to strength. 2013/2014 saw our largest ever group o students and they did some wonderul work, not least the 121 Digital programme with the actively retired and the majority o them will achieve the bronze Gaisce Award by year’s end. Our basketballers have had a tremendous year. Our girls did really well reaching the all Ireland playos and our boys, who had never previously contested an All Ireland Basketball Final, were simply antastic, reaching the fnals in the u 19, u 16 and frst year competitions. We witnessed wonderul teamwork, sportsmanship, passion and some abulous basketball at the National Basketball arena in Tallaght and the frst year fnal at UL was, we are told, incredible. Thank you or the excitement you generated in the school and or our sense o pride in your achievements. You should be very proud o your silver medals.A huge thank you to your Manager and Coach Mr Shane O Neill and Mr John Teahan respectively or the tremendous role they played in your success. Adam King is heading to the European Youth Olympic Trials Championships in Azerbaijan rom which a top ten fnish will see him qualiy or the Youth Olympic Games in Beijing. Cillian O Donovan added the Irish Mountain Running Trial or the European Junior Championships, run in 36°C in Marseilles, to an ever growing list o titles. He tuned up well in our recent 5k run, fnishing clear. Liam O Connell too is enjoying great success: he was the u 18 indoor and outdoor PrinciPal’s Message John O’Connor (Principal)
