Curry College — Department of Politics and History P&H 1020 U.S. History II sect. 2 Tues. — Thurs. 2:30 PM AAPC 114 who show up beyond the 10-minute mark in class will not be able to take it. The final exam is cumulative, and will be based on 1) essays drawn from material you will have prepared during the class, and 2) unit identifications. You will receive an exam prep sheet in the weeks before the final exam. Attendance and Class Participation: Student attendance and participation in discussions are absolutely required for success in this class. Class participation, which includes BlackBoard commentary, is worth 20% of your final grade. For each unexcused absence above two, the student will lose one full letter grade (e.g., from B to C) for class participation] To be clear, this means that with more than 5 absences, the student will receive an F for class participation, with the effect of lowering your overall grade for the course at least one full letter grade. You are to arrive in class having read the material assigned for that day, and, particularly in Thursday discussions, be prepared to speak about and discuss the reading material. As the essays you write will combine material from the textbook, course reader, class notes, and other material assigned; one cannot expect to do well in the course without regular attendance and participation in discussions (including asking questions, which is strongly encouraged). In addition, all students are required to participate in BlackBoard discussions related to the unit questions. More on this in class. Grading: One-paragraph essay exercise 5% Four Unit Essays: 40% (10% of final grade for each essay) Three ID quizzes: 15% (5% of final grade for each quiz) Final Exam: 20% Class Engagement (in class/online) 20% REQUIRED Textbooks, Available in the Curry College Bookstore: Roarke, Johnson, Cohen, et. al., The American Promise: Vol. II, from 1865 , 5 th ed. Michael P. Johnson, Reading the American Past, Vol. II: From 1865 , 5 th ed. Strategies for Success in This Class — Read, reread, and understand all of the material on writing for this class, including material on plagiarism. If you have any questions, please ask before you make a mistake or a bad decision. — Use all essay questions for each of the four units as a study guide for the final exam. If you can answer all of the questions from each unit, at least in outline form, you will be in good shape for the essay questions on the final. The themes for the final exam essays will be drawn directly from the unit essays. You may use any notes, outlines, or essays you write in class to answer final exam essay questions. — Prepare for the discussion sessions by 1) reading all of the material assigned for that day; 2) determining the main idea for each of the readings; 3) perhaps most important, understand how each document is useful in the various unit essay questions . I will be looking for how well you use the material from all sources in the essay questions, and on the final exam. — Class participation is 20% of the grade. Discussion sections are only as interesting as students make them. Ask questions, do the reading, comment on Blackboard, be engaged. All of this will prepare you for the exam.
