Going for a Run Thinking about a solution beore attempting to solve a problem is critical or quick success. Albert Einstein is quoted as having said that i he had one hour to save the world, he would spend 50 minutes deining the problem and only ive minutes inding the solution. 24 Age group: Any Time needed: 30 minutes Focus: Leadership, Teamwork, Cooperation, Problem Solving Materials required: Marbles, plastic eggs, chipboard, masking or painter’s tape, buckets Group sizes: Two teams Preparation: No preparation is needed. Smart brains know... Pre-discussion: What is problem solving? What are some problems you have had to solve in the last week? Did anyone help you solve your problem? I so, how? Do you think it is more eicient to think about a problem be- ore beginning to work on the solution or to just start trying dierent things? Why? Activity: 1. Divide students into two teams. Give each team a marble and one piece o chipboard per team member. 2. Have each team line up ingertip to ingertip. Use masking or painter’s tape to create a line next to the oot o the irst person in each line. Place a bucket approximately two eet rom the oot o the last person in each line. Have the teams line up behind their masking tape lines. 3. Tell students the object o the activity is to move the marble rom the masking tape line to the bucket, using only chipboard to move the marble. There are several rules that must be ollowed in order to successully complete the task. I any o the rules are broken, the team must begin again. • Once in motion, the marble may never stop or roll backwards. • The marble may not be dropped on the ground. • The marble may not be touched by any person afer it is put into motion. • The pieces o chipboard may not touch each other or overlap. When a person has the marble in her chipboard, she may not move her eet. Once she has passed the marble, she is ree to move. 4. To make the activity more challenging, have teams move both a marble and plastic egg at the same time. Post Discussion: Describe the strategy used by your team. Did you plan your strategy beore beginning the activity or as you were attempting to move your marbles? What was the most challenging part o the activity? How did your team use teamwork? What would you do dierently i you were to do the challenge again? © MindWorks Resources 2014
