Rabbi Adam J. Raskin Dearest Friends... The annual Har Shalom play is one o the truly special parts o our synagogue culture. With the production o Shrek, the Musical, I have now had a cameo role in our o the ten plays that the congregation has perormed. While my rabbinic responsibilities preclude me rom taking on a larger role, I am privileged to watch a very special community coalesce around each production. I have come to deeply appreciate the connections among kids and adults rom a variety o dierent backgrounds, aliations, and even religions. Har Shalom is a known as a quality community theater venue. Some o the most talented local thespians (did you see this year’s Shrek and Fiona?) audition or parts in our productions. This is great role modeling or younger actors who look up to these seasoned, experienced perormers and learn a lot rom their talents. Closer to my heart, Har Shalom provides one o the only community theater venues that is sensitive to Shabbat observance and other Jewish religious sensitivities. This brings in a whole cast o perormers rom various synagogues, day schools, and synagogue aliations who are able to come together here, and participate in something they love without compromising their religious convictions. This year our two lead characters, neither o whom are Jewish, attended Saturday morning services the day o the show’s opening. They were able to meet members o the congregation, and see our community in action. They told me how much they loved the service; how interesting and inspiring it was, and how much they enjoyed getting to know more congregants. To me this is a Kiddush Ha’shem, a sanctifcation o God’s name: Not only are we oering Jewishly committed actors a place to perorm, we are also introducing non-Jews to the warmth and depth o a Jewish community and congregation they likely would never have appreciated without this play. Another side beneft or me is the opportunity to spend many hours o preparation and perroming with kids and adults rom Har Shalom. It is very special to get to have that kind o inormal exposure to each other, and to orge relationships in that setting. I have come to know and adore several congregants due to the plays bringing us together! O course, the Har Shalom plays are also a great source o revenue, and positive PR or the shul. This year was outstanding in both respects. On this 10 th anniversary o the Har Shalom Players perormances, I hope we can look orward to many more incredible shows, and the beautiul inclusive community they cultivate. L’shalom, Rabbi Raskin “ I have come to deeply appreciate the connections among kids and adults from a variety of different backgrounds, afliations, and even religions
